The 33rd edition of the Summer Olympics is set to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and India is poised to send a contingent of athletes to compete on the world stage. Building upon the success of the Tokyo Games, where India secured two silver and two bronze medals in wrestling, boxing, and weightlifting, the nation is eager to showcase its sporting prowess in Paris.
In weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu will be India’s sole representative. The silver medalist from the Tokyo Games, Chanu qualified for the Paris Olympics by securing a top-10 ranking in the women’s 49kg category in the Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQR).
Boxing will see Jaismine Lamboria representing India in the 57kg category. Lamboria’s journey to Paris was filled with determination. Initially unable to secure a spot in the 60kg category, she seized an opportunity as a reserve in the 57kg division and reclaimed the quota during the second and final World Boxing Olympic Qualifiers in Bangkok.
Amit Panghal (51kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) are the two male Indian boxers who have secured their places in Paris, having earned their respective quotas in Bangkok.
India’s wrestling contingent is set to make a strong showing in Paris, with six wrestlers securing their spots. Antim Panghal became the first wrestler to earn a quota for the Paris Games, achieving a bronze medal in the 53kg category at the World Championships in Belgrade last year. Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), and Reetika Hooda (76kg) secured their quotas during the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, while Aman Sehrawat (57kg) and Nisha Dahiya (68kg) achieved the same during the World Olympic qualifiers.
With a diverse and talented group of athletes set to represent India in Paris, the nation is looking forward to a strong showing at the Games, aiming to surpass their previous achievements and inspire future generations of Indian athletes.
