The Paris Paralympics 2024 officially kicked off on Wednesday with a joyous opening ceremony, setting the stage for a historic competition. India, fielding its largest-ever Paralympic contingent, is determined to make its mark on the global stage. The first day of competition sees action in archery, badminton, and table tennis, with India’s athletes ready to prove their mettle.
Among the first Indian competitors to take the field is 16-year-old para-archer Sheetal Devi. Sheetal, who uses her legs and mouth to shoot arrows with incredible precision, will be competing in the Women’s Individual Compound Open Ranking Round alongside her compatriot Sarita. Sheetal, a double gold medalist at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, is a true inspiration and a testament to the spirit of the Paralympics.
In the men’s archery, India’s Rakesh Kumar will be competing in the men’s individual compound open ranking round. Rakesh, who narrowly missed a medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, is hoping to win his first Paralympic medal in Paris. He has a strong track record of success, having won multiple medals at the Fazza Para Archery World Ranking event, a gold medal at the World Para Archery Championship 2023, and a gold and two silver medals at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.
Also competing in the archery are Harvinder Singh in the men’s recurve individual, Shyam Sundar Swami in the men’s compound individual, and Pooja in the women’s recurve open individual.
