India’s Roadmap: S Jaishankar Outlines Foreign Policy Goals for China, Pakistan, and UNSC Seat

In the aftermath of retaining his position as Minister of External Affairs in Narendra Modi’s third cabinet, S Jaishankar has presented the ministry’s roadmap for navigating India’s relationships with China and Pakistan, as well as the country’s aspiration to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

In terms of China, Jaishankar emphasized the priority of finding a solution to border disputes. He acknowledged the recent border tensions with China, including the 2020 Galwan clash, and stressed the need for diplomatic and military efforts towards a resolution.

Regarding Pakistan, Jaishankar highlighted India’s determination to address the long-standing issue of cross-border terrorism. India has consistently maintained its stance against tolerating cross-border terrorism and has emphasized Pakistan’s responsibility in creating an environment free from terrorism, hostility, and violence.

Jaishankar expressed confidence in India’s ability to achieve its goal of securing a UNSC seat within the next five years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He noted the expanding influence of India on the global stage and pointed to the country’s growing recognition as a trusted partner, particularly among developing nations.

The External Affairs Minister emphasized the steady growth of India’s global influence and the recognition of India’s support for the Global South. He highlighted India’s successful advocacy for African Union membership during its G20 presidency, demonstrating the increasing trust and responsibilities bestowed upon the nation.
