Amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, the question of India’s potential role in mediating a resolution has gained prominence. Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has highlighted India’s ‘global role’ and its growing influence in West Asia, specifically referencing the strengthening ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While acknowledging India’s potential to play a mediating role, Azar emphasizes that the decision ultimately rests with New Delhi.
Azar noted the ‘great relations’ between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, highlighting their potential to foster a positive dialogue. He further emphasized the significance of India’s growing influence in the region, particularly citing the ‘growing bonds’ between India and the UAE and their ongoing agreements that aim to connect India better with the Gulf region. Azar referred to the UAE as a ‘hub to connect east and west’, showcasing the strategic importance of the region.
India’s position on the Israel-Palestine conflict is characterized by its long-standing and consistent support for a negotiated two-state solution. This commitment is clearly articulated in an official statement by the Indian government, which advocates for the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders, living side by side in peace with Israel.
In the context of the ongoing Gaza war, India has condemned the terror attacks on Israel by Hamas fighters, which occurred on October 7, 2023. India has also expressed its condemnation of the loss of civilian lives in the conflict, calling for restraint and de-escalation. An official statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasizes the need for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
The conflict has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with over 40,000 people reported dead in the Gaza Strip. Israel, which has been conducting airstrikes in the area for eleven months, has stated that it is ‘near’ to completing its ‘mission in Gaza.’ Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has indicated that the focus will now shift to securing the country’s northern border with Lebanon.
