The countdown to the T20 World Cup has begun, and India faces the crucial task of selecting their wicketkeeper. Five contenders are vying for the spot: Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, and Jitesh Sharma.
Given India’s need for a middle-order batsman, Ishan Kishan’s chances are slim despite his impressive batting at the top for Mumbai Indians. Pant and Karthik hold an edge over the others, who prefer to bat in the top three. Jitesh Sharma’s reputation as a finisher has taken a hit due to his low returns in IPL 2024.
Currently, Pant and Samson are considered the frontrunners, with Karthik as a potential dark horse. Karthik, despite being 38, has proven his prowess as a finisher. Harbhajan Singh, former India cricketer, believes the spot should go to Samson, citing his batting consistency and leadership skills.
Samson’s performance as Rajasthan Royals’ captain and batsman has been exceptional. With 314 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 152.3, he is a force to be reckoned with. However, like Kishan, his batting position at No.3 for RR may count against him. Pant, on the other hand, has scored 254 runs at a strike rate of 150 batting at No.4 or 5. India’s wicketkeeper is likely to bat at No.5 or No.6, positions where Pant has more experience.
Karthik, with 251 runs at a strike rate of 196 for RCB this year, is another contender. The selectors must decide whether to rely on his experience or look towards the future.
With the World Cup just around the corner, the selection committee has a vital decision to make in choosing India’s wicketkeeper.
