India’s Tanvi Patri has brought home a gold medal from the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 junior championships in Chengdu, China. The 13-year-old dominated the under-15 girls singles competition, defeating Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen of Vietnam in straight games in the final.
Patri, seeded No. 1, showcased her prowess throughout the tournament, remaining undefeated in all five matches. She even overcame a deficit in the first game of the final, trailing 11-17 before rallying to win 22-20. Her dominance continued in the second game, securing a decisive 21-11 victory and the championship title.
Patri’s win follows in the footsteps of Samiya Imad Farooqui and Tasnim Mir, who secured the U-15 girls singles title in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
In addition to Patri’s gold, Gnana Dattu brought home a bronze medal in the U-17 boys singles event on Saturday. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) Secretary General, Sanjay Mishra, highlighted the strong talent pool emerging from India, crediting the robust domestic circuit for preparing young players for international competition.
India’s success at the championships, with two medals including a gold and a bronze, underlines the potential of the country’s rising badminton stars.
