Indonesia’s Airports Embrace Biometric Technology for Enhanced Security and Efficiency

Indonesia is taking a significant leap forward in airport technology with the implementation of over 150 biometric eGates, powered by Vision-Box, now part of Amadeus. This innovative move aims to revolutionize the travel experience at two of the country’s busiest airports: Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.

The project, a collaboration between the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia, Sinergi Teknoglobal Perkasa, and Vision-Box, represents a major step in enhancing border security and modernizing travel processes. The initiative kicked off in 2023 at Jakarta’s airport with the installation of 78 Automated Border Control (ABC) Seamless Gates®, including specialized eGates designed for passengers with reduced mobility. Building on this success, the program expanded to Bali, where an additional 90 ABC Seamless Gates® are being deployed.

These biometric systems have already made a tangible difference for millions of travelers, both local and international. Over 6 million passengers have experienced the benefits of faster and more efficient immigration procedures, significantly reducing the time spent on manual passport checks. The automated system not only streamlines immigration but also minimizes the need for human intervention, making the infrastructure better equipped to handle increasing passenger numbers, particularly as Indonesia’s air travel market is projected to exceed 200 million passengers annually by 2030.

The introduction of biometric technology brings numerous advantages. The new system contributes to a more efficient and secure travel experience by minimizing waiting times, streamlining immigration processes, and fostering a cohesive data-sharing ecosystem among trusted partners. This data sharing enhances overall airport operations and ensures that the infrastructure can effectively manage the growing volume of travelers.

By embracing this technology, Indonesia is positioning itself as a global leader in creating a seamless and secure travel environment. The success of this initiative highlights the country’s commitment to managing its rapidly growing travel demands and ensuring a safe and efficient experience for all passengers. Indonesia is not only prepared to handle the future challenges of the travel industry but is also setting a new standard for airport operations, prioritizing both security and convenience.
