The Great Indian Kapil Show recently witnessed a delightful dose of humor and heartwarming anecdotes as Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and his wife, Sudha Murty, graced the stage. The couple, known for their incredible achievements and down-to-earth personalities, charmed the audience with their lighthearted stories about their life together.
One particularly hilarious moment came when Narayana Murthy confessed to forgetting their 25th wedding anniversary. Recalling the incident, he shared how Sudha Murty, ever the subtle hint-giver, asked him, “Is anything special today?” in a casual conversation with host Kapil Sharma. Murthy, oblivious to the significance of the day, simply replied, “No, nothing,” and headed to the office. However, fate had other plans. As he was getting into his car, Sudha Murty tried again, “Think of anything special today?” Murthy, still lost in his own world, responded with a resounding “No!” – a moment that led to a hilarious intervention from their daughter, Akshata Murty, now married to former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Akshata, who was studying in the United States at the time, called her father later that evening. Upon hearing that he was heading to Mumbai, she exclaimed, “Cancel the flight right now, take the first flight back to Bangalore tomorrow morning, and wish your wife a happy anniversary! I don’t care if you have a speech at 3 pm. If you need to hire a private plane, hire it, but come back and wish her!” The audience erupted in laughter as Narayana Murthy recounted this amusing tale of his daughter’s unwavering support for his forgetful ways.
Sudha Murty, ever the gracious wife, added that she wasn’t as upset as her daughter was. “It was our 25th wedding anniversary, so it doesn’t happen every year. I thought, let me give him a cue, but it didn’t work,” she said, with a touch of playful annoyance. “For five to ten minutes, I felt bad because I’m also human. But my daughter was very upset. She went, ‘In America, this never happens!’ But I went, ‘India main it happens though’, who can remember these things?”
Adding to the lightheartedness, Sudha Murty jokingly confessed to being a “terrible cook.” She quipped, “Look at his weight; it’s thanks to my cooking! I always tell wives not to cook great food if they want their husbands to lose weight. I’m not an expert in cooking, so I don’t take risks. I know he’s not a foodie, and that’s an advantage for me.” She went on to share a humorous instance when she forgot to add salt to a dish, but Narayana Murthy, with his unwavering support, said, “You took time to cook, so I won’t complain.” Her final words were a piece of wisdom for the husbands watching, “Boys should learn to cook to help their wives in the future.”
The couple’s appearance on the show provided a heartwarming glimpse into their life as a couple, proving that even the most successful individuals share the same relatable struggles and find joy in the little things. Their humorous anecdotes and genuine affection for each other brought a smile to everyone’s face, leaving the audience wanting more.
