The Indian Navy warship INS Mumbai has made history by embarking on its first-ever port call in Sri Lanka, arriving in Colombo for a three-day visit. This significant event underscores the deepening maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, further solidifying their strong bilateral relationship.
The visit marks a new milestone in the naval relations between the two nations. It is the eighth instance of an Indian Navy ship visiting Sri Lankan ports this year, showcasing the ongoing collaborative efforts in the maritime domain.
Beyond the symbolic importance of this inaugural visit, INS Mumbai’s presence in Colombo serves a practical purpose. The ship will deliver essential spare parts for the Dornier maritime patrol aircraft utilized by the Sri Lanka Air Force, ensuring their continued operational readiness.
To further enhance mutual understanding and professional exchange, the visit includes a familiarization tour of INS Mumbai for Sri Lankan Navy personnel. This opportunity allows them to gain insights into the ship’s operational practices and capabilities, fostering a deeper connection between the two navies.
The visit also provides a platform for diplomatic and operational exchange. The Commanding Officer of INS Mumbai will meet with Rear Admiral WDCU Kumarasinghe, the Commander of the Western Naval Area, facilitating discussions on maritime security, cooperation, and regional issues.
Further strengthening the bond between the two navies, INS Mumbai will participate in joint activities with the Sri Lanka Navy, including engaging in friendly sports competitions, yoga sessions, and a beach cleaning initiative. These activities promote camaraderie and goodwill, reinforcing the shared commitment to a clean and healthy maritime environment.
While in Colombo, INS Mumbai will undergo an Operational Turn-Around, allowing the ship to replenish its fuel and provisions. This ensures its continued operational readiness for future missions.
The crew of INS Mumbai will also have the opportunity to explore the local sites in Colombo and Galle during their stay, experiencing Sri Lanka’s rich culture and historical landmarks.
Before departing on August 29, INS Mumbai leaves a lasting impression, further strengthening the India-Sri Lanka maritime partnership. Commissioned on January 22, 2001, INS Mumbai is the third ship of the Delhi-class destroyers and underwent a mid-life upgrade before rejoining the Eastern Naval Command in December 2023.
