Instagram to Prioritize Original Content, Crack Down on Reposts

Instagram’s latest algorithmic update aims to support content creators and ensure that the original source of content is recognized and promoted. This move comes after mounting criticism from influential creators who claim that their original work is not receiving the same visibility as reposted content.

In response, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced two key changes to the platform’s algorithm:

1. Reposted content will be replaced with the original in recommendations, and a label will be added linking back to the source, which will remain visible to the reposter’s followers.

2. Aggregators that repeatedly share unoriginal content will be removed from users’ feeds.

These changes are intended to reward original content creators and encourage users to share their own unique creations. Instagram has stated that it will be actively seeking out the original source of content and promoting it over reposted versions.

Content aggregators, who often share content from multiple sources, will need to find ways to make the content their own or focus on collaborating with the original creator of the content they are sharing.

For users, this update means that they can expect to see more original content in their feeds, while aggregators should expect to see significant changes in how their content reaches a wider audience. Instagram’s focus on promoting original content is a positive step towards recognizing the value of creators and ensuring that their work is seen by a wider audience.
