Nestled in a breathtaking tropical paradise, the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa is celebrating a momentous milestone – its 50th anniversary. This iconic resort, originally opened as Travelodge Tahiti on June 19, 1974, has consistently been a top destination in French Polynesia, captivating travelers with its seamless blend of luxury and the vibrant Polynesian spirit.
This year marks not only the resort’s anniversary but also welcomes a new chapter with the appointment of Laurent Vigneron as its General Manager. Laurent brings a wealth of experience from luxury hospitality destinations across the globe, including Bora Bora, Moorea, Morocco, Algeria, and Switzerland. His commitment to excellence, cultural immersion, and sustainability perfectly aligns with the resort’s vision.
To commemorate this special occasion, the resort launched a captivating exhibition at Tahiti airport in May 2024. The exhibition, titled “50 Years of Polynesian Hospitality,” showcases portraits of the resort’s dedicated employees who have played instrumental roles in shaping its rich history. These portraits offer a glimpse into the faces and stories of those who have contributed to the resort’s legacy. More portraits are on display at the resort itself through the end of the year, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to connect with the resort’s past. Accompanying the exhibition is a short film that beautifully highlights the resort’s vibrant cultural life, capturing the essence of its Polynesian heritage.
In early August, the resort hosted the annual Mini Heiva celebration, a vibrant showcase of Tahitian dance and culture. This year’s event was especially memorable, featuring a captivating performance by the award-winning HEITOA dance troupe, formed by resort staff. Their performance paid a touching tribute to the resort’s history, showcasing the deep connection between the resort and the Polynesian culture.
From its humble beginnings with 200 rooms and 17 bungalows on a private motu, the resort has undergone multiple transformations. It was first rebranded as “Tahiti Beachcomber” in 1979-1980, later becoming “Tahiti Beachcomber Parkroyal” in 1987, and finally taking on the prestigious InterContinental Tahiti Resort name in 2001. Throughout its evolution, the resort has introduced signature experiences that have become synonymous with its identity. One such experience is the popular Friday-night Tahitian dance show, first launched in 1982. This vibrant celebration has evolved into the beloved Te ‘Ui Tapairu, honoring Tahitian dance traditions and captivating audiences with its energy and beauty.
Other notable milestones in the resort’s history include the creation of the lagoonarium, a natural coral and fish reserve that showcases the region’s marine biodiversity. The resort has also collaborated with renowned chefs like Marc Haeberlin and Bruno Oger, bringing their culinary expertise to enhance the dining experience. Furthermore, the resort’s unwavering commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement has been a constant throughout its journey. Through these efforts, the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa has established itself as a true embodiment of luxury, cultural immersion, and sustainability, making it a cherished destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable experience in French Polynesia.
