Investment Announced for Indigenous-Led Police Services in Prince Albert Grand Council Communities

Investment Supports Indigenous-Led Police Services for Prince Albert Grand Council

The federal government, in collaboration with the Saskatchewan provincial government and the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), has announced an investment of over $1.4 million to fund a study on implementing Indigenous-led police services. This study will examine the feasibility of establishing culturally sensitive policing models in the 28 communities represented by the PAGC.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the safety and security of First Nations communities. The federal budget announced in 2023 included a proposed investment of $267.5 million over five years, starting in 2024-25, and $92.5 million per year ongoing, for First Nations and Inuit-led policing.

This investment builds on the partnership between the three levels of government to advance culturally sensitive policing in Prince Albert Grand Council communities. The study will assess the effectiveness and appropriateness of different policing models, ensuring that public safety strategies reflect the unique values of these communities.

The PAGC Grand Chief, Brian Hardlotte, expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the feasibility study will allow the council to develop comprehensive public safety strategies that truly reflect the values of their member First Nations.

The investment is a significant step in enhancing the public safety and security of Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan and across Canada.
