Apple unveiled a slate of software updates for its flagship products at WWDC 2024, including iPadOS 18 for the iPad. While the update is technically available now, there are a few things to consider before jumping in. iPadOS 18 comes in three flavors, each with its own release timeline throughout the year. Let’s dive in.
iPadOS 18 Developer Beta Release Date
The first developer beta of iPadOS 18 was released during WWDC 2024. As the initial version, it’s missing features like Apple Intelligence and is likely to be the most buggy. While you can download it even if you’re not a developer, it’s recommended to wait for a few more developer betas to be released. These later betas will be more stable and feature-rich, offering a better experience.
iPadOS 18 Public Beta Release Date
Apple plans to launch the first public beta version of iPadOS 18 in July. Public betas are designed for non-developers and are generally more stable than developer betas. While you may still encounter some issues, they are expected to be less frequent than in the developer versions.
iPadOS 18 Release Date
Apple has a history of releasing major software updates alongside new iPhone releases, and this year is likely no different. We can expect the first public version of iOS 18 to be released alongside the iPhone 16 series in September. iPadOS 18 might follow suit, but don’t be surprised if it’s pushed to October.
While Apple announced the iPad Pro (M4) and iPad Air (M2) earlier this year, updates for the regular iPad and iPad mini are still awaited. These updates could arrive alongside the initial public release of iPadOS 18.
Once it’s finally out for everyone, iPadOS 18 promises exciting features like Apple Intelligence, enhanced customization tools, revamped Notes and Photos apps, and the first official Calculator app for the iPad. A dedicated Password app is also in the works. Messages, Mail, Safari, SharePlay, and Freeform are getting new tools as well.
Not all iPads will be compatible with iPadOS 18, but the majority of them will be. You can check Apple’s website for a complete list of supported devices. With so many improvements in store, iPadOS 18 is poised to elevate the iPad experience even further.
