Iran and Sweden Conclude Prisoner Swap, Releasing Convicted War Criminal

Iran and Sweden have reached an agreement to exchange prisoners, releasing Hamid Nouri, who was convicted by Sweden of war crimes related to mass executions in Iran. In return, Iran has freed Johan Floderus, a Swedish national who worked for the European Union’s diplomatic corps, as well as a man known as Saeed Azizi.

According to a statement by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on the social media platform X, the released individuals are en route to Sweden, where they will reunite with their loved ones. Oman played a crucial role as a mediator in facilitating this swap, as reported by the state-run Oman News Agency.

Iranian state television confirmed the release of Nouri and announced his imminent return to Tehran. In 2022, the Stockholm District Court sentenced Nouri to life imprisonment for his involvement in the executions. The court identified Nouri as an assistant to the deputy prosecutor at Gohardasht prison, situated outside of Karaj, Iran.
