Iran-Pakistan Ties: Raisi Visits to Mend Strained Relations

Amidst efforts to mend strained ties, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan for discussions encompassing religious, cultural, diplomatic, investment, and security matters.

Both Iran and Pakistan pledged to unite against terrorism. They signed eight agreements to enhance cooperation in various fields. Discussions focused on expanding trade and communication between the two nations.

“We are dedicated to bolstering relations at the highest levels,” President Raisi stated during a press conference. “Trade volume between Iran and Pakistan is inadequate. As a first step, we aim to increase trade to $10 billion.”

Prime Minister Sharif emphasized, “We must maintain this strong relationship amidst our challenges. Pakistan and Iran can flourish, and our borders can witness progress.” He raised the Kashmir issue, but President Raisi did not reciprocate.

This visit aimed to repair the tension that arose after airstrikes targeting alleged terrorist hideouts in both countries. Both nations have accused each other of harboring armed groups, leading to a tense January incident in Balochistan province.
