Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi Killed in Helicopter Crash

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19. The helicopter, carrying Raisi and other Iranian officials, disappeared over a mountainous region in southern Iran on Sunday evening. Rescue teams were unable to reach the crash site due to fog and bad weather conditions, but the wreckage was found the following day.

India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will visit Iran on Wednesday, May 22, to pay his respects and attend the memorial ceremony for Raisi, Amir-Abdollahian, and the other Iranian officials who lost their lives in the crash.

The incident has come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the ongoing conflict in Gaza and recent escalations between Iran and Israel. Raisi had previously expressed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestine and taken a strong stance against Israel.

The elections to appoint a new President of Iran will be held on June 28, 2024.
