Iran Used Domestic Drones to Locate President Raisi’s Helicopter After Crash

The Iranian military announced on Wednesday that it had successfully used domestically produced drones to locate the helicopter of President Ebrahim Raisi after it crashed in the country’s northwestern mountains. The incident occurred on Sunday, when the helicopter carrying President Raisi and his entourage crashed on a fog-shrouded mountainside while returning from a ceremony on the border with Azerbaijan. A massive search and rescue operation was promptly launched, with assistance from the European Union, Russia, and Turkey. However, a drone dispatched by Turkey, despite being equipped with night-vision technology, was unable to accurately locate the crash site. It was ultimately Iranian drones and ground rescue forces that discovered the wreckage early on Monday morning. The military has stated that a drone sent by Turkey failed to provide an accurate location for the helicopter crash, despite having night-vison equipment. An investigation into the cause of the crash has been ordered, as it also resulted in the tragic loss of seven members of President Raisi’s entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
