The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is on a mission to revolutionize the train ticket booking experience for millions of Indian travelers. In a bid to address the persistent problem of long wait times and failed transactions, IRCTC has announced a major capacity enhancement initiative that aims to significantly improve the efficiency of its online ticketing system.
This ambitious project, which is expected to be completed by March 2025, will increase the ticketing capacity from its current limit to an impressive 225,000 bookings per minute. This significant leap in capacity will allow IRCTC to seamlessly handle the ever-growing demand for online train tickets, ensuring a smooth and quick booking process for all passengers.
Currently, over 900,000 train tickets are booked online each day, including both individual bookings and those made by agents. With more than two crore passengers traveling by train daily, the demand for efficient and reliable ticket booking services is consistently on the rise.
The enhanced ticketing capacity will not only address the issue of long wait times but also significantly reduce the risk of failed transactions, where passengers’ money is deducted without tickets being issued. These glitches, often attributed to the system’s current capacity limitations, have been a source of frustration for many travelers.
This initiative is a testament to IRCTC’s commitment to providing a better travel experience for Indian citizens. By making train travel more convenient and accessible, IRCTC is playing a key role in enhancing the overall satisfaction of rail services in India.
