Ireland’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices in its tourism sector has been recognized with the inclusion of its Observatory in the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO). This milestone marks the country’s dedication to responsible tourism development. To commemorate this achievement, a delegation from the UN Tourism met with Ms. Catherine Martin, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, to explore recent advancements in tourism sustainability and resilience. The delegation emphasized the necessity of collective action in addressing global challenges. The Observatory will work closely with destinations along the Atlantic coast, islands, and Heartlands region to oversee, assess, and promote sustainable tourism initiatives. These efforts aim to strike a balance between environmental preservation, socio-economic growth, and cultural safeguarding. The Observatory embodies a commitment to informed decision-making through participatory methods and transparency. Among its responsibilities, the Observatory will monitor 11 key areas spanning climate change, water and energy management, as well as local satisfaction and accessibility. These areas align with the pillars of sustainability and reflect a comprehensive approach to sustainable tourism.
