The Indian Embassy in Muscat is closely monitoring the situation following a shooting incident at a mosque in the city on July 15th, which resulted in the death of one Indian national and injuries to two others. The attack occurred during the Shiite religious observance of Ashura, an annual day of mourning commemorating the seventh-century death of Imam Hussein.
In a statement, the Indian Embassy expressed condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing its commitment to supporting the Indian community in Oman. Indian Envoy to Oman, Amit Narang, personally spoke with the families of those affected by the incident. The victim who died has been identified as Basha Jan Ali Hussain, and the Embassy has offered assistance in repatriating his remains to India.
ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The terror group announced on Tuesday evening that three “suicide attackers” opened fire on worshippers at the mosque. A gun battle ensued with Omani security forces, lasting throughout the night and into the morning, according to Reuters.
ISIS released a video purportedly showing the attack on the Telegram messaging app. The three gunmen involved in the attack were killed, and police have “concluded the procedures for dealing with the shooting,” according to Omani authorities.
The incident resulted in a total of six fatalities, including a police officer, and 28 individuals from various nationalities were wounded, including rescuers and paramedics. The foreign ministry in Islamabad reported that at least four Pakistanis were killed in the attack.
