ISL Coaches Aim High: New Era, Renewed Hope for Indian Football

The Indian Super League (ISL) is set for a thrilling new season, with fresh faces and ambitious goals. The departure of Kerala Blasters’ popular coach, Ivan Vukomanovic, who led the team to consecutive playoff appearances, has left a void filled by Mikael Stahre. The Swede, however, is ready to forge his own path, emphasizing a dynamic approach to coaching. “I completely respect the previous coach, but an old relationship is like having an ex-husband or an ex-wife,” Stahre said. “My job is to do my training in my way.” He aims to inject energy into the team and create an electrifying training environment. Stahre is also excited about playing in front of Kerala Blasters’ passionate fanbase, a stark contrast to his recent experiences in Thailand and the Durand Cup.

Meanwhile, Owen Coyle, the head coach of Chennaiyin FC, articulated the shared responsibility of ISL clubs to elevate Indian football. “We all have a duty towards improving Indian football,” he said, emphasizing the need to elevate the league’s global standing. Coyle also expressed optimism about the national team’s future under Manolo Marquez, hoping for a climb in the FIFA rankings and a potential World Cup qualification within the next decade.

The ISL Cup champion Mumbai City FC, led by Petr Kratky, expects a highly competitive season. “I think there are eight teams in contention including Goa, Kerala, Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru and Chennai,” said Kratky. “All these teams look good this season, they have good coaches, good players so we have to respect that but we know our qualities so we have to do our best.”

Last season’s tight competition, with a mere three points separating the top three teams, sets the stage for an intense battle. While the media day in Kochi saw six teams present, FC Goa’s head coach Manolo Marquez, who also holds the reins of the Indian national team, was absent. Sandesh Jhingan, the Goa captain, reassured fans that Manolo is well-equipped to manage both roles. “I think you need to ask Manolo that question, he is doing that job. He is well equipped to handle both,” said Jhingan.

The new season promises a captivating blend of experienced and ambitious coaches, innovative strategies, and a shared desire to propel Indian football to new heights. With the league’s focus on development and the coaches’ unwavering commitment to excellence, the 2024-25 season is shaping up to be a pivotal chapter in the story of Indian football.
