Following the acceptance of a ceasefire proposal put forward by Egypt and Qatar by Hamas, the Israeli military launched targeted strikes against the militant group in the southern Gaza city of Rafah late Monday, following approval from the country’s war cabinet. A Palestinian security official revealed that Israeli tanks had entered Rafah, a town in southern Gaza, and had approached within 200 meters (yards) of the crossing with neighboring Egypt. According to Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV, Israeli authorities had previously notified Egyptians that the troops would withdraw once the operation was complete. Following Israel’s military operation in sections of the Gaza Strip, over a million people have flocked to tents and apartments in Rafah. Israel asserts that Rafah serves as Hamas’ final stronghold, but the United States remains opposed to a full-scale invasion of the Egyptian border until the country presents a ‘credible’ plan to protect citizens in the city.
