Israel’s President Condemns Campus Unrest over Gaza War at US Universities
Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, has expressed strong criticism against US universities for the campus unrest and anti-Semitism that have surrounded Israel’s war in Gaza. In a special broadcast, Herzog conveyed his support to Jewish communities, highlighting the alarming resurgence of anti-Semitism and the intimidation and hostility faced by Jewish students on campuses in the United States.
The protests, which have taken place at over 30 universities since last month, often include tent encampments and demonstrations against the rising death toll in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s offensive in Gaza has reportedly resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry. The demonstrations have posed challenges for university administrators, who must uphold free speech rights while addressing concerns about criminal activity, anti-Semitism, and hate speech.
President Herzog emphasized the need for resilience and unity in the face of these challenges. He expressed solidarity with Jewish communities and condemned the violence, harassment, and intimidation that have occurred on campuses. He urged individuals to stand against anti-Semitism and to fight for their rights to believe and belong, as well as their right to live peacefully and securely as Jews and Israelis anywhere in the world.
