Ivy House School in Littleover, Derby, is embarking on an innovative project to convert a retired train carriage into a new library for its pupils. This creative initiative is expected to provide a unique and engaging learning environment for students with serious learning difficulties and complex health issues.
The Shaw Education Trust announced that the Ivy House Express will be an “immersive and engaging” facility. Work is set to begin this month, starting with the removal of a bike shed to make way for a 20-meter section of track and ballast. The train carriage, restored by Burton-upon-Trent firm Riviera Trains, will be craned in during the half-term break.
Once in place, the carriage will be transformed into a library and learning space, complete with an accessible platform for the students. Headteacher Ian Armstrong emphasized the innovative approach behind the project, stating that the train carriage library aims to enhance the learning experience by providing a stimulating environment that captures students’ imaginations and fosters a love of reading.
Armstrong highlighted that many students have never traveled by train due to their special educational needs and disabilities, making this project particularly significant. This project is not only a significant development for Ivy House School but also serves as an inspiration for other educational institutions worldwide.
