J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT) is taking a significant step towards sustainable transportation by adding 20 Nikola Corporation (NKLA) Tre fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to its fleet. These new vehicles will primarily serve customers along the West Coast, providing them with greener freight solutions. This move further strengthens J.B. Hunt’s commitment to sustainability, building upon its existing fleet of over 200 alternative-powered vehicles. This impressive fleet includes battery-electric, hydrogen-electric, and renewable natural gas (RNG) vehicles.
Greer Woodruff, executive vice president of safety, sustainability, and maintenance at J.B. Hunt, emphasizes the importance of these zero-emission vehicles in achieving viable, sustainable options for customers. “Zero-emission vehicles such as these will help along the path to generate viable, sustainable options that help customers advance their efforts to reduce carbon emissions,” she stated.
Nikola will provide crucial fueling and infrastructure support for the FCEVs through its HYLA brand. Despite challenges, Nikola has been steadily pushing forward in the fuel cell electric vehicle market. While NKLA stock has experienced a significant decline of over 90% in the past year, the company remains committed to its vision.
J.B. Hunt’s commitment to alternative-powered vehicles extends beyond this latest acquisition. In 2023, the company acquired three Nikola FCEVs that are currently supporting dedicated customer operations. Additionally, J.B. Hunt has been actively involved in pilot programs and partnerships with companies like Clean Energy and Daimler Truck North America, demonstrating its willingness to explore and implement innovative sustainable solutions.
This strategic move by J.B. Hunt showcases the growing importance of sustainability in the transportation industry. By embracing zero-emission vehicles and working with leading companies like Nikola, J.B. Hunt is positioning itself at the forefront of this critical industry shift.
