## J.D. Okhai Ojeikere: A Retrospective of Sculptures for a Day at agnès b. Galerie Boutique
J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, the renowned Nigerian photographer known for his captivating images of women’s hairstyles, continues to inspire artists even after his passing in 2014. His legacy is being celebrated in a retrospective exhibition at the agnès b. Galerie Boutique in Tokyo, offering a rare glimpse into his iconic works.
Born in 1930 in a rural village in western Nigeria, Ojeikere embarked on his photographic journey in the 1950s, armed with a Brownie D camera, devoid of flash. He documented the transformative era of Nigeria’s independence from British rule, capturing the societal and cultural shifts with striking clarity. His works garnered widespread acclaim, establishing him as a leading figure in 20th-century African photography.
The exhibition, titled “Sculptures for a Day,” presents 24 pieces from Ojeikere’s celebrated ‘Hairstyles’ and ‘Headdresses’ series, culled from a larger exhibition held at agnès b.’s Galerie du Jour in Paris from March to May 2024. This marks the first solo exhibition of Ojeikere in Japan, and the largest showcase of his work in the country in two decades.
Ojeikere immortalized the ephemeral hairstyles of Nigerian women through his lens, etching their cultural value and context into eternity. The displayed photographs serve as a timeless testament to his enduring artistic vision. They are more than just images; they are a profound celebration of the beauty of women and their hairstyles.
