Jac Cameron, a seasoned fashion industry veteran and denim expert known for her work at AYR and Calvin Klein, has launched a new brand called Rùadh. With Rùadh, Cameron takes a “go small or go home” approach, prioritizing craftsmanship and a connection to nature.
This new venture is a departure from the large-scale fashion she’s experienced in the past. “I just wanted to put something out there that really spoke to craftsmanship again; not a massive collection,” Cameron explained. The initial collection features only 11 pieces, with new categories added each season. For Fall 2023, Cameron is exploring hand-knitted sweaters made in Scotland. She aims to “really make fashion feel like a cherished art form again.”
While based in New York for two decades, Cameron grew up on a farm outside Glasgow. To capture the essence of her brand, she returned to her Scottish roots, specifically to Elgin, for the first Rùadh collection photoshoot. The imagery portrays models in golden fields under a clear sky, showcasing the brand’s distinctive denim with its supple lightness and gentle shapes.
Rùadh is deeply rooted in attention to detail. The buttons on a pullover shirt are made in Italy from recycled fibers, and a seam above the ankle creates a curved leg line. Jacket pockets feature a small vent, and many pieces are made with regenerative cotton. Production takes place in a smart factory in Los Angeles, ensuring a focus on hand-touched craftsmanship.
“For me it’s about construction and making sure things are hand-touched,” Cameron emphasized.
The brand’s name, Rùadh, is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning red. It’s a term often used to describe redheads, embodying a spirit of strength and quiet resilience. Much like denim, which ages beautifully and is built to last, Rùadh embodies these qualities, offering a timeless and sustainable approach to fashion.
