The latest round of banter started after Vaughan proposed a two-tier system for Test cricket. Citing the decline in popularity of the longest format and the disparity in financial resources across cricket boards, Vaughan suggested dividing Test teams into two groups of six.
Jaffer, never one to miss an opportunity, responded to Vaughan’s suggestion with a screenshot from a month ago showing England languishing at the bottom of the World Test Championship table. His cheeky tweet highlighted the timing of Vaughan’s proposal, as England had just recently climbed to fifth position in the WTC standings after securing a dominant 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka in a three-match series. England’s resurgence included a five-wicket win in the first Test at Manchester followed by a comprehensive 190-run victory at Lord’s.
Jaffer’s playful jab was a reminder of England’s recent struggles and the fluctuating nature of Test cricket. The third and final Test between England and Sri Lanka will be played at The Oval, London, starting September 6th.
