India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has taken a firm stance on the West Asian conflict during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. He echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for an end to the era of war and reiterated India’s commitment to a two-state solution.
Joining the heads of delegations for a photo session ahead of the BRICS Outreach session, Jaishankar shared his insights on the ongoing conflicts in the region. He highlighted the widespread anxiety surrounding the escalation of violence and the significant impact it has had on maritime trade and the lives of people in the region.
Jaishankar emphasized the importance of adhering to international law without exception and stressed zero tolerance for terrorism. He stated, “The situation in the Middle East – West Asia for us, is an understandable concern. There is a widespread anxiety that the conflict would spread further in the region.” He further added, “Any approach has to be fair and durable, leading to a two-state solution.”
Beyond the Middle East, Jaishankar also underscored the importance of respecting agreements once reached. He emphasized the need for a strong commitment to multilateralism, combating terrorism, and fostering economic growth during the BRICS Summit. The summit, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, brought together leaders from BRICS member countries to address pressing global issues, including the concerns of the Global South.
The BRICS leaders welcomed the addition of 13 new partner countries to the organization, signifying its growing global influence and commitment to addressing global challenges. Jaishankar’s participation at the BRICS Summit highlights India’s active engagement on the international stage, emphasizing its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and cooperation on a global scale.
