This recipe is incredibly versatile. Enjoy it as a delightful afternoon tea treat paired with a cup of Earl Grey tea or serve it as a delightful post-meal dessert. The chocolate drizzle adds an extra touch of indulgence, making it the perfect way to end any meal.
Here’s what you’ll need:
* 150g unsalted butter (at room temperature)
* 200g plain flour
* 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra to sprinkle
* One orange
* 50g quality dark chocolate (70 percent)
Let’s get baking!
1. Preheat your oven to 190oC (375oF) or gas mark 5.
2. Prepare a 20cm square baking dish by greasing it and lining it with parchment paper.
3. In a mixing bowl, combine the butter, flour, sugar, and the zest from half an orange. Use your thumbs and fingertips to rub the mixture together, creating a crumbly texture.
4. Press the mixture together to form a dough—avoid kneading.
5. Spread the dough evenly in the lined baking dish to a thickness of about 1cm.
6. Use a fork to prick the surface of the dough, creating small holes that allow steam to escape during baking, preventing the shortbread from puffing up.
7. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the shortbread turns a light golden color.
8. While still warm, remove the shortbread from the oven and sprinkle a little extra sugar on top.
9. Allow the shortbread to cool completely.
10. While the shortbread is cooling, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Remove from the heat once melted.
11. Cut the shortbread into 12 finger-sized pieces and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
12. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of each piece of shortbread.
13. Grate the remaining orange zest on top of the chocolate-drizzled shortbread.
Serve your delicious chocolate orange shortbread with a cup of tea and a few fresh orange slices for an extra burst of citrusy flavor. Enjoy!
