Japan Airlines Bolsters Vietnam Presence Amidst Tourism Upswing and Yen Fluctuation

Japan Airlines (JAL) is significantly expanding its footprint in Vietnam, capitalizing on the burgeoning market and strengthening the already robust ties between the two nations. Last weekend marked a significant milestone – the 30th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh City – Japan air route. The celebratory event served as a platform for Takahiro Miyagi, managing director of JAL’s regional sales office in Vietnam, to underscore the airline’s remarkable journey since its inaugural flight from Osaka to Ho Chi Minh City on November 16, 1994.

Over the past three decades, JAL has played a pivotal role in fostering economic, cultural, and tourism exchanges between Japan and Vietnam. The airline’s contribution to this flourishing relationship has been undeniable. In 2019, JAL reached a peak passenger count, a testament to its expanding network that reached 199 destinations across 66 countries and territories, coupled with its consistently high-quality service. The airline’s resilience was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic; by 2023, passenger numbers not only recovered but surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 35%, reaching 135% of their 2019 figures. This robust recovery underscores JAL’s unwavering commitment to its Vietnamese operations.

Currently, JAL operates a substantial schedule between Vietnam and Japan, with two daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City and one from Hanoi. This frequency reflects the airline’s dedication to providing convenient and reliable travel options for passengers traveling in both directions. The airline’s operational excellence is further highlighted by its ranking as the second most on-time airline in the Asia-Pacific region by aviation analytics firm Cirium, showcasing its commitment to punctuality and passenger satisfaction.

The strong aviation link directly impacts tourism figures. Between January and August of this year, over 461,000 Japanese tourists visited Vietnam, representing a significant 79% of the total number recorded for the entire year of 2023. This demonstrates the immense potential of the market. However, the recent weakening of the Japanese yen has presented a challenge, impacting the spending power of Japanese tourists and potentially slowing down the growth in tourist arrivals. Despite this headwind, Vietnam remains a top-ten tourism destination for Japanese travelers, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, showcasing the enduring appeal of Vietnam as a destination for Japanese travelers.

Despite the economic uncertainty, Japan Airlines remains committed to its expansion strategy in Vietnam. The airline recognizes the long-term potential for growth and is actively exploring ways to further strengthen its presence in the country. This commitment includes investing in enhanced services, expanding its route network where feasible, and continuing to foster strong relationships with local businesses and tourism authorities. JAL’s long-term vision for Vietnam underscores its confidence in the country’s economic growth and its position as a key player in the Asia-Pacific region.
