Japan Travel Fair 2024: Strengthening Tourism Ties Between Cambodia and Japan

The vibrant colors and captivating sounds of Japan filled AEON Mall Sen Sok (AEON 2) this past weekend as the annual Japan Travel Fair opened its doors. From December 7th to 8th, 2024, Cambodian citizens had the unique opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and explore the myriad travel opportunities available in the Land of the Rising Sun. This year’s fair, a resounding success organized by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), aimed to further strengthen the already robust tourism and economic ties between Japan and Cambodia.

The opening ceremony was a testament to the importance of this event, graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Cambodian Minister of Tourism Huot Hak; Uneo Atsushi, Japan’s Ambassador to Cambodia; Nakasugi Hajime, Executive Director of the JNTO Bangkok Office; and Kawakami Akio, General Manager of AEON Mall Sen Sok. Their attendance underscored the significant collaborative efforts between both nations to promote tourism and cultural exchange.

Minister Huot Hak highlighted the impressive depth of the economic relationship between Japan and Cambodia, emphasizing the remarkable $2.5 billion in Japanese investment over the past 25 years. He further noted the significant contribution of over 1,700 Japanese entrepreneurs currently operating within Cambodia, demonstrating the strong economic foundation underpinning the cultural exchange promoted by the fair.

Ambassador Uneo Atsushi emphasized the continuity and success of the Japan Travel Fair, emphasizing its annual occurrence since 2017. He highlighted the event’s crucial role in showcasing the multifaceted appeal of Japan as a tourist destination, ranging from its historical sites and modern cities to its breathtaking natural beauty and unique culinary experiences. The aim, he explained, is to inspire Cambodians to consider Japan as their next travel destination, drawing them in with the unique cultural offerings and experiences the country provides.
