On Monday’s episode of ‘The Daily Show,’ former senior correspondent Jessica Williams playfully poked fun at her former boss, Jon Stewart, for expressing his disdain towards the media’s obsessive coverage of Donald Trump’s hush-money trial.
Stewart initiated his monologue by criticizing various news outlets for their excessive tracking of Trump’s every move, including his daily commute from Midtown to Lower Manhattan. He questioned the necessity of following Trump to court each day, comparing it to the infamous O.J. Simpson chase.
Williams, however, interjected and enthusiastically defended the media’s approach. She argued that the trial, despite its seemingly mundane moments, offers a welcome distraction from the constant stream of depressing news, describing it as ‘an open window in a Greyhound bus full of farts.’
She further emphasized the comedic potential of the trial, highlighting the absurdity of a ‘gross old man/former president’ potentially facing jail time for an affair with a porn star and subsequent hush-money attempt. Williams’s main point of contention was Stewart’s disapproval of the trial’s coverage, calling it a ‘gift’ to the public.
The playful debate between the former colleagues concluded with Williams abruptly departing upon spotting an individual she believed was David Pecker, a key witness in the trial. Williams acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the identity of the individual, leaving the reunion between them unresolved.
