Jesuit High School to Embark on Historic Rugby Journey in Japan

Jesuit High School’s remarkable rugby team will depart for Munakata City in Fukuoka, Japan, to participate in the prestigious 2024 Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament. The tournament, held during Japan’s Golden Week national holiday, will gather teams from across the globe, including South Korea, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Fiji, and China.

This historic participation marks the first time an American team will compete in this world-renowned rugby tournament. The Jesuit High School rugby team earned their place after an impressive second-place finish at last year’s national tournament.

Coach Andrew Acosta expressed his initial disbelief at the invitation, stating, “Originally I thought it was a joke.” However, the team’s dedication and determination have garnered widespread support, making this once-unimaginable opportunity a reality.

During the tournament, Jesuit Rugby will face formidable opponents in two Japanese teams and a team from New Zealand in their bracket. The team is eager to showcase their skills and compete against some of the world’s best young rugby players.
