Amidst the ongoing battle against the Line Fire in San Bernardino County, a beacon of community spirit shone brightly at the Dovid Oved Retreat Center in Running Springs, California. As of September 17, 2024, the fire had consumed 39,111 acres with 49% containment. To express their heartfelt appreciation for the tireless efforts of over 110 firefighters from various agencies, the Jewish camp hosted a special barbecue.
The retreat center has been a pillar of support throughout the fire, offering vital resources such as water for fire trucks, beds for rest, restrooms, parking and staging areas for vehicles, and other crucial facilities. This unwavering support has been instrumental in bolstering the firefighters’ efforts to protect the camp and the surrounding communities.
The wildfire, which erupted earlier this month, posed a significant threat to the retreat center and its neighbors. However, thanks to the swift and coordinated response of CAL FIRE, the Running Springs Fire Department, and other agencies, the retreat center miraculously escaped damage.
“We are deeply thankful to these brave men and women who risked their lives to save our retreat and the surrounding community,” said Joe Zapeda, head of maintenance at the Dovid Oved Retreat Center. “In addition to offering them a meal today, we are committed to continuing to support their efforts in any way we can. Providing a place for them to rest and recharge is a small token of our immense gratitude.”
As the wildfire continues to challenge the region, the collaboration between the retreat center and firefighting agencies exemplifies the power of community support during times of crisis. By extending their gratitude and providing much-needed respite and nourishment to the firefighters working under extreme conditions, the retreat center has demonstrated the true spirit of community resilience.
