Jewish Students Encouraged to Leave Columbia University Amid Pro-Palestinian Protests
Tensions have escalated at Columbia University following the establishment of a “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” by pro-Palestinian students on campus. Eric Schorr, a former Israel Defense Force intelligence officer, voiced concerns for Jewish students’ safety and advised them to leave the school and possibly seek alternative educational institutions.
“As a security professional, the campus is no longer safe,” Schorr stated, urging the Jewish community to vacate the university entirely.
The Columbia/Barnard Hillel community expressed disagreement, emphasizing their belief that Jewish students should not be compelled to leave campus. They called on the university and city officials to enhance security measures.
Other Jewish community leaders, including Rabbi Robin Buechler, have warned students of rising antisemitism and anarchy. Buechler urged Jewish students to return home as soon as possible.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has issued warnings about potential violence during the Jewish holiday of Passover. Columbia University President Minouche Shafik announced the suspension of in-person classes due to these concerns.
The escalation of tensions on campus reflects the broader conflict between Israel and Palestine, which has seen thousands of casualties on both sides. Student groups such as Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) have demanded that the university divest from companies affiliated with Israel.
Shafik condemned antisemitic language and promised appropriate action against those who engage in such behavior. The university community remains on high alert amid the ongoing protests and heightened security concerns.
