Man Resembling Serbian Secret Services Assassin Identified in Jill Dando Murder Case
In a startling revelation, an investigation has uncovered that a man captured on CCTV footage after the 1999 murder of renowned Crimewatch presenter Jill Dando bears a striking resemblance to a convicted Serbian secret services assassin.
Facial comparison expert Emi Polito conducted a meticulous analysis, revealing numerous similarities between “Man X” in the CCTV footage and Milorad Ulemek, a twice-convicted murderer currently imprisoned in a Serbian prison. At the time of Jill’s murder, Ulemek commanded a formidable squad of hitmen who targeted opponents of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic.
Calls for Investigation
Jill’s brother, Nigel, and Barry George, who was wrongfully convicted and later cleared of the murder, have both expressed their interest in this new lead and urged the police to pursue a thorough investigation.
Michael Mansfield KC, who defended Mr. George during the first trial, emphasized the significance of this finding and called for a renewed investigation. He suggested that the recent Netflix show “Who Killed Jill Dando?” may have provided a clue to solving the mystery.
Investigative Details
When Jill was murdered, the Yugoslav war was in full swing, with British aircraft participating in NATO bombing campaigns against Serbia. Jill had been appealing for aid to Kosovan refugees who were being massacred by Milosevic’s forces. Within hours of her death, a call was made claiming the murder as retaliation for the bombings.
The assassin’s facial features, including his mouth, chin, and hairline, closely resemble those of Ulemek. Despite limitations in the CCTV footage, Mr. Polito concluded that there were no discernable differences between Man X and Ulemek. However, a more definitive conclusion may be possible with higher-quality CCTV images.
Additional Evidence
The investigation also uncovered a dent on the bridge of Ulemek’s nose that is not visible in the CCTV footage but appears in an e-fit created by an eyewitness at the time.
Ulemek’s lawyer initially declined to comment on the allegations, stating that his client was not interested in participating.
Unresolved Murder
Jill’s murder on her doorstep on April 26, 1999, shocked the nation and prompted one of the largest homicide investigations in UK history. However, it remains one of Britain’s most notorious unsolved murders.
Despite the passage of time, the police have stated that they will consider any new information that could potentially lead to a breakthrough in the case.
