Jimmy Shergill’s cinematic odyssey began with a memorable encounter on the sets of ‘Mohabbatein.’ In a recent interview, he vividly recalled his first meeting with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and the charismatic Shah Rukh Khan at a ‘havan’ ceremony held prior to the commencement of the film’s production. Shergill, who joined the cast as the last addition, faced an unforeseen hurdle in the form of an injury that cast doubt on his ability to participate in the rigorous training sessions. However, during the ‘havan’ ceremony held at Yash Chopra’s residence, he was formally introduced to Bachchan, who, with his characteristic wit, acknowledged Shergill’s bandaged hand and playfully alluded to his character’s propensity for sustaining injuries. That same day, Shergill also had the pleasure of meeting Shah Rukh Khan, who has maintained a cordial relationship with him ever since.
Shergill’s casting in ‘Mohabbatein’ was finalized at a later stage, placing him behind Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, and the three female leads (Shamita Shetty, Kim Sharma, and Preeti Jhangiani), who had already embarked on their training. Unfortunately, just as Shergill joined the project, he suffered an injury to his hand, prompting the organization of a ‘havan’ ceremony at Yash Chopra’s residence to seek blessings for the film’s success. It was during this ceremony that Shergill was introduced to Amitabh Bachchan, who, upon seeing his bandaged hand, quipped, ‘You’re doing amazing method acting. You’ve started getting your hands cut even before the film has begun.’ Shergill was initially taken aback by Bachchan’s comment but later realized that the veteran actor was referring to his character, Karan, who frequently sustained hand injuries in the film, providing an opportunity for Preeti’s character to bandage them. Shergill couldn’t help but admire Bachchan’s quick wit, which came so effortlessly and spontaneously.
Shergill’s encounter with Shah Rukh Khan occurred on the same day during the ‘havan’ ceremony. Since then, SRK has consistently displayed warmth and friendliness towards Shergill. Looking back on those early days, Shergill expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside such legendary actors, an experience that left an indelible mark on his career.
