In a significant development for the esteemed Jamia Millia Islamia, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Professor Mazhar Asif as the new vice chancellor. Asif, currently a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) School of Languages, will assume his role for a five-year term or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first. The appointment, announced by the Union Ministry of Education, fills the vacancy left by the previous VC, Najma Akhtar, whose tenure ended in November 2023.
Professor Asif, a JNU alumnus, brings a wealth of experience and accomplishments to this prestigious position. Notably, he was a member of the drafting committee for the new National Education Policy, 2020, demonstrating his deep understanding and commitment to shaping the future of Indian education. He has also held prominent leadership roles in various national education initiatives, including the National Institute of Open Schooling and the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language.
Beyond his academic credentials, Asif is a prolific author with nine books published in Persian, English, and Assamese, including a comprehensive Persian-Assamese-English dictionary.
