President Joe Biden has confided in his closest advisors about his fears that his son, Hunter Biden, could face prison time in an upcoming felony gun case. The Justice Department has charged Hunter with three felonies, including two counts of making false statements and one count of firearm possession by an unlawful substance abuser. The charges stem from allegations that Hunter purchased a handgun in October 2018 while he was struggling with crack cocaine addiction.
Biden’s aides are concerned that his anxiety over the case will grow as the June 3 trial date approaches. “He worries about Hunter every single day, from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to sleep,” an advisor told Politico. “That will only pick up during a trial.”
Biden has “expressed fears” to at least three of his advisors about the possibility of Hunter being convicted and sentenced to prison. The maximum sentence for the felonies Hunter is charged with is 25 years in prison.
The White House will leave it to Hunter’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, to defend the case in the press and the courtroom. The White House will not be setting up a “war room” to react to the trial.
Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorneys have unsuccessfully tried to get the case dismissed and the trial delayed.
The case is expected to generate significant media coverage. Biden is expected to watch some of the coverage and will continue to check in on Hunter daily through texts and calls.
