Edmonton’s Joey’s Home, a permanent supportive housing project for people with disabilities, is set to receive $340,000 in provincial funding to add five new units and renovate its existing facility. The funding, provided through the Affordable Housing Partnership Program (AHPP), will allow the facility to expand its capacity and provide specialized housing for individuals with dementia-related challenges and intellectual disabilities.
Joey’s Home, operated by the Winnifred Stewart Association, has been providing affordable housing and support services to individuals with diverse abilities since 2007. The facility is named after Edmonton icon Joey Moss, who was a long-time resident and advocate for people with disabilities. Moss, who passed away in 2020, worked as an Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Elks staff member for over three decades and became a beloved figure in the community.
The funding will allow Joey’s Home to add five new units, bringing the total number of specialized housing units to 17. The facility will also undergo renovations to its Mindful Hearts Memory Care Centre, a two-storey home in north-central Edmonton. The renovations will include the addition of three common kitchens and a living room on each floor.
The expansion and renovation of Joey’s Home is a significant investment in affordable housing and support services for people with disabilities in Edmonton. The funding will allow the facility to meet the growing demand for specialized housing and continue to provide a safe and caring environment for its residents.
