American gymnast Jordan Chiles has spoken out about the devastating and heartbreaking news of being stripped of her bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 23-year-old from Los Angeles was awarded the medal after a score revision, but Romania appealed the decision, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that the US appeal came too late. Consequently, the International Gymnastics Federation awarded the medal to Romanian Ana Barbosu.
Despite USA Gymnastics providing time-stamped video evidence that their appeal was filed on time, CAS refused to reconsider its decision. In response, USA Gymnastics has vowed to push the case to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Chiles expressed her shock and disappointment, stating that she had confidence in the appeal and that the decision feels unjust. She added that the racially motivated attacks she received on social media following the controversy were extremely hurtful.
“While celebrating my Olympic accomplishments, I heard the devastating news that my bronze medal had been stripped away,” Chiles said. “I had confidence in the appeal brought by USAG, who gave conclusive evidence that my score followed all the rules. This appeal was unsuccessful. I have no words. This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow, not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey. To add to the heartbreak, the unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this sport and I am so proud to represent my culture and my country,” she continued.
Despite the disappointment, Chiles expressed her determination to pursue justice. “I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career. Believe me when I say I have had many. I will approach this challenge as I have others — and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done,” she wrote.
Chiles also expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her family, teammates, coaches, fans, and organizations like USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. She remains committed to the sport and is determined to overcome this setback.
This situation highlights the complexities and controversies that can arise in high-stakes sporting events. While Chiles continues to fight for her rightful recognition, it remains to be seen how the Swiss Federal Tribunal will rule on the appeal.
