Jordan has parted ways with coach Hussein Ammouta by mutual consent. The Moroccan coach, who guided Jordan to its first-ever Asian Cup final, requested a contract termination. The Jordanian Football Association (JFF) announced this decision on Saturday.
Ammouta faced heavy criticism after Jordan went winless in seven games throughout 2023. Despite the recent struggles, he led an unexpected Jordan side to the Asian Cup final earlier this year, where they aimed for their first major trophy but fell to host Qatar. The JFF acknowledged the special circumstances preventing Ammouta from continuing his role and agreed to his request to terminate his contract, along with that of his support staff.
The JFF expressed appreciation for Ammouta’s achievements, stating that they will always be valued by the Jordanian football family and fans. However, the association did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Under Ammouta’s guidance, Jordan also topped its World Cup qualifying group, surpassing Saudi Arabia to reach the third round. This achievement secured their qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup.
The JFF has appointed Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami as the new technical director of the national team. Sellami will lead the squad in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September. Jordan has yet to qualify for the World Cup.
