Jordan Walker, the St. Louis Cardinals’ former top prospect, has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis after a disappointing start to the season. The 21-year-old outfielder was batting .155 with no homers and four RBIs in 20 games before being sent down.
Walker had been struggling mightily, going 3-for-27 with nine strikeouts over his last 11 games. The Cardinals decided to send him to the minors to get regular playing time and work on his swing.
Walker batted .276 with 16 homers and 51 RBIs in 117 games during his 2023 rookie season. He was expected to be a key contributor for the Cardinals this season, but he has yet to find his footing at the major league level.
The Cardinals also optioned left-hander Zack Thompson to Memphis and recalled fellow left-hander John King and infielder Jose Fermin in corresponding moves.
