Jordi Fernandez, the former associate head coach of the Sacramento Kings, has been named the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. The 41-year-old replaces interim head coach Kevin Ollie, who took over in February after Jacque Vaughn was fired.
Nets GM Sean Marks expressed excitement about Fernandez’s appointment, highlighting his diverse experience and basketball knowledge gained throughout his coaching career. Fernandez has a proven track record of implementing effective systems and building strong relationships with players.
Fernandez, who also serves as head coach of the Canadian National Team, has previously held assistant coaching roles with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets. He was also the head coach of the Canton Charge in the NBA Development League from 2014 to 2016.
The Nets finished the 2023-24 season with a disappointing 32-50 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018. They were also swept in the first round of the postseason in both 2023 and 2022.
Fernandez was one of three finalists for the Nets’ vacant head coaching position, along with former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer and Suns associate head coach Kevin Young. The Nets are hopeful that Fernandez can lead them back to the playoffs and establish a winning culture in Brooklyn.
