Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, affectionately known as JRD Tata, stands as a towering figure in the annals of Indian aviation. Born on July 29, 1893, he is widely regarded as the Father of Indian Civil Aviation, his name synonymous with the pioneering spirit that shaped the nation’s skies.
JRD Tata’s passion for flying was ignited at a tender age. At just five years old, during summer vacations in Northern France, he was captivated by the sight of airplanes landing on the beach. He watched with awe as Adolph Pegoud, the chief pilot of Louis Bleriot—the man who made history by being the first to fly across the English Channel in 1909—demonstrated his aerial prowess. This early fascination fueled a lifelong dream, and by the age of 15, JRD had resolved to pursue a career in aviation.
However, the path to fulfilling his dream wasn’t a straightforward one. It wasn’t until he was 24, nine years after his initial resolve, that a flying club opened in Bombay, finally offering him the opportunity to chase his passion. He wasted no time, eagerly pursuing his flying license. Despite facing stiff competition, JRD persevered, becoming the first to pass the flying test. On February 10, 1929, he proudly received his commercial aviator’s certificate, adorned with the coveted ‘No. 1’ tag.
That same year, JRD Tata embarked on a revolutionary journey to transform India’s aviation sector. He established Tata Air Service, the nation’s first airline, which eventually evolved into the iconic Air India. In a symbolic gesture, JRD himself piloted Air India’s inaugural flight on October 15, 1932, marking the dawn of a new era in Indian civil aviation. Even after the government took control of Air India, JRD remained its chairman, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the airline he had founded.
