Jupiter Power Launches 400MWh Battery Storage Facility in Houston, Boosting City’s Clean Energy Supply

Jupiter Power LLC has announced the successful launch of its Callisto I battery energy storage facility in Houston, Texas. This facility provides 400MWh of dispatchable power to the ERCOT grid, marking a significant boost in Houston’s clean energy supply. The facility, located in central Houston, is the first large-scale battery energy storage project of its kind in the city and will play a crucial role in meeting the city’s growing energy demands. This project is also a response to recent calls by lawmakers for increased investment in affordable and dispatchable power sources.

The Callisto I Energy Center, situated on the site of a former fossil fuel power plant, is capable of accommodating an additional 400MW/800MWh of battery energy storage generation. The facility’s strategic location, close to the Medical Center and the Houston Ship Channel, ensures its proximity to critical infrastructure and energy demands.

Jupiter Power CEO, Andy Bowman, expressed pride in bringing the project online, highlighting its importance in bolstering Houston’s power supply and providing greater resilience against extreme weather events. Jane Stricker, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative, described the project as a crucial step towards the region’s energy transition, emphasizing its role in addressing peak power demand.

State Senator Charles Schwertner, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce, also acknowledged the significance of diversifying Texas’s energy generation portfolio, highlighting the crucial role batteries play in addressing peak energy demands.

Callisto I represents Jupiter Power’s expansion into Houston, adding to its existing fleet of battery energy storage projects in West Texas. The company has a portfolio of nine projects in the ERCOT grid, totaling 1,375MWh.

Jupiter Power, founded in 2017, is a leading developer, owner, and operator of grid-connected battery energy storage projects.
