Jupiter Power’s Callisto I Battery Energy Storage Facility Starts Operations in Houston

Jupiter Power LLC has announced the commencement of commercial operations for its Callisto I battery energy storage facility in Houston, Texas. This facility brings 400 MWh of dispatchable power to the ERCOT grid, significantly enhancing Houston’s reliable, zero-emission power supply. This development addresses the city’s growing energy needs and its vulnerability to record demand increases. The Callisto I Energy Center, a 200 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system, is strategically located in central Houston, close to major infrastructure. The site has the potential to accommodate an additional 400 MW/800 MWh of battery energy storage generation in the future. Andy Bowman, Chief Executive Officer of Jupiter Power, expressed the company’s pride in bringing Callisto I online, emphasizing its role in meeting Houston’s increasing power demand and enhancing resilience against extreme weather events. This project represents Jupiter Power’s expansion beyond West Texas and into Houston, providing clean, resilient, and emissions-free power to the city. Jane Stricker, Senior Vice President and Houston Energy Transition Initiative (HETI) Executive Director at the Greater Houston Partnership, highlighted the significance of Callisto I as the first large-scale transmission-connected energy storage project in the city. She emphasized its contribution to addressing peak power demand and its role in fostering a future of diverse energy solutions. Senator Charles Schwertner, Chairman of the Senate Committee of Business and Commerce, underscored the importance of a diversified generation portfolio in Texas, emphasizing the crucial role of batteries in meeting demand during critical times. Jupiter Power, established in 2017, specializes in developing, owning, and operating standalone, grid-connected battery energy storage projects. Callisto I marks the company’s ninth project in ERCOT, expanding its total ERCOT fleet to 1,375 MWh. In December 2023, Jupiter Power secured $65.2 million in financing from First Citizens Bank to fund the construction of Callisto I. Jupiter Power is a leading energy storage infrastructure platform with expertise in trading, analytics, development, finance, operations, and construction. The company is currently developing over 11,000 MW of projects across the United States, with offices in Austin, Houston, and Chicago.
