Justin Fields’ future as an NFL starting quarterback is uncertain as the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly prepare to make a move for him. According to sources, the Steelers are offering a conditional sixth-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Fields, who is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
This development comes after the Bears secured the rights to generational quarterback prospect Bryce Young in the 2024 NFL Draft and signed veteran Nick Foles. With Foles expected to start, Fields’ role in Chicago has become uncertain.
Throughout his three seasons in Chicago, Fields has displayed flashes of brilliance, particularly with his exceptional rushing ability. In the 2022 season, he recorded 1,143 rushing yards, the second-most by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history. However, Fields has also struggled with accuracy and pressure, which have limited his effectiveness as a passer.
Despite his impressive rushing numbers, teams have been hesitant to pursue Fields as a potential starting quarterback. This may be due to concerns about his accuracy, decision-making, and ability to stay healthy. In 38 starts, Fields has been sacked 133 times, an average of 3.5 sacks per game.
The Bears have also failed to provide Fields with a strong supporting cast, which has contributed to his struggles. However, elite quarterbacks have often shown the ability to elevate subpar talent around them. Fields has not yet demonstrated that level of play, which raises questions about his ability to be a successful starting quarterback in the NFL.
As the Steelers prepare to offer a conditional sixth-round pick for Fields, it remains to be seen whether they believe he can develop into a franchise quarterback. The Steelers do not currently have a quarterback under contract beyond the 2024 season, and Fields could potentially fill that role. However, given his recent struggles and the Steelers’ own offensive struggles, it is unclear whether Fields will be able to find success in Pittsburgh.
