Juventus has made a statement of intent by securing the services of Dutch midfielder Teun Koopmeiners from Atalanta in a deal worth up to €60.7 million ($67.5 million). The transfer, confirmed by the Serie A giants on Wednesday, represents the biggest move of the summer in the Italian league, surpassing the €51.5 million Juventus paid to bring Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa.
Koopmeiners’ arrival marks the end of a high-profile transfer saga, as the 26-year-old midfielder had pushed for a move away from Atalanta. He was even excluded from the squad for the first two games of the season, reportedly citing stress as the reason. However, the two clubs eventually reached an agreement, and Juventus now have another key piece in place as they undergo a makeover under new coach Thiago Motta.
The transfer fee of €51.3 million, payable over four years, could rise to €60.7 million with add-ons. Koopmeiners has signed a five-year contract with Juventus, reportedly earning €4.5 million per season.
Koopmeiners was a standout performer for Atalanta last season, scoring 15 goals across all competitions and playing a crucial role in their historic Europa League triumph. His arrival further strengthens Juventus’ midfield, adding another creative and goal-scoring threat to their ranks.
Juventus are currently atop the Serie A table after winning their opening two matches against Como and Verona. They face struggling Roma this Sunday, aiming to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Meanwhile, Atalanta has swiftly moved to replace Koopmeiners by signing Ivorian international Odilon Kossounou on loan from Bayer Leverkusen with an option to buy. The deal is reported to cost €5.5 million for the season-long loan, with the possibility of making the move permanent for €25 million.
